Our Story
The University of Mary Washington's growing prominence and national distinction is the result of rigorous academic programs and our extraordinary, student-focused campus community that values and instills personal honor and integrity.
The University is a place where faculty, students, and staff share in the creation and exploration of knowledge through freedom of inquiry, personal responsibility, and service. UMW regards the provision of high-quality instruction as its most important function. The University offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs focusing on both disciplinary and interdisciplinary studies. These academic programs afford students opportunities to integrate and apply their knowledge within broad educational experiences, to develop their professional interests, and to practice the habits of mind necessary for life-long learning. Through a professionally engaged faculty, the University supports ongoing research appropriate to the development of student abilities and faculty interests. It especially encourages the participation of undergraduates in research.
Planned gifts are the ultimate expression of confidence in the University of Mary Washington's mission. There are many ways to plan your estate so that your legacy continues in a manner that pays tribute to you and your loved ones, while supporting the next/future generations of students at Mary Washington.
The Heritage Society honors alumni, parents, and friends who have established a planned gift. Deeply rooted in the history of Fredericksburg and the Mary Washington campus, the Brompton Oak was chosen to symbolize membership in the Heritage Society. Located at Brompton, the official residence of the UMW president, the oak tree was featured in a famous photo by well-known Civil War photographer Mathew Brady. Today the Brompton Oak stands tall as living testimony that, with care and nurturing, trees and great ideas can continue to grow while connecting one generation to the next.
Because all planned gifts represent an expression of lifetime commitment to Mary Washington, the Heritage Society has no minimum gift level. If you choose to take steps to include Mary Washington in your plans, we would encourage you to consider how you would like your gift eventually used to benefit your alma mater.
